Description
[Astronauts/Gemini 8] Color photograph of the 1966 Gemini 8 Agena Target Vehicle (GATV-8) signed on mount by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott. The Gemini program was the second American manned space mission, designed as a bridge between the Mercury and Apollo programs, to test equipment, rendezvous procedures, docking, re-entry and space walking techniques and to train astronauts and ground crews for future Apollo missions. Gemini 8 allowed the first docking of two spacecraft while in orbit although a stuck thruster nearly blacked out the crew before the spinning could be stopped. Neil Armstrong, (1930-) flew on Gemini 8 and the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, where he became the first person to step onto the moon. David Randolph 'Dave' Scott, (1932-) flew on Gemini 8, Apollo 9 and Apollo 15 and is the seventh person to walk on the moon and the first to drive a lunar wheeled vehicle. In marker on verso of mount: “Agena Target 50 Ft. from Gemini.” Mount: 16 x 20 in. Img: 11 1/8 x 13 ¾ in. Very good. Provenance: Given to John Petersen, Chief Publicist for NASA manned space missions.
