Satchmo! Louis Armstrong Signed Photograph
LOUIS ARMSTRONG (1900-1971). American jazz trumpeter and goodwill ambassador of New Orleans jazz.
Signed Photograph, 8” x 10”, black and white, no date, Choice Extremely Fine. This image features the jazz artist performing on stage with his trumpet at his right side. This publicity photograph is printed with the contact information for Armstrong’s manager, Joe Glaser, at the lower right. Signed in blue ink in the center of the lower margin, “Louis Armstrong.” Minor creasing at the very edge of the bottom corners, otherwise, in fine condition.
Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong is probably the most celebrated figure in jazz (with the possible exceptions of Duke Ellington or Charlie Parker). Affectionately known as "Satchmo," he introduced "scat" singing, in which the voice imitates instrumental improvisations.
Some of his best-known and most enduring songs came from the period 1925-27 - the Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings - including: "Cornet Chop Suey", "Heebie Jeebies", ''Jazz Lips", "Skid-Da-De-Dat", "Gut Bucket Blues", "Twelfth Street Rag", "Melancholy Blues", "Wild Man Blues" and "Potato Head Blues". His distinguished career included worldwide concert tours, club appearances, records, TV and over 35 motion pictures and film shorts. Armstrong appeared in more films (both with and without his orchestra) than any other jazzman, including Pennies from Heaven (1936), Artists and Models (1937), Doctor Rhythm (1938), Cabin in the Sky (1943) - as the Devil's Trumpeter, New Orleans (1947) - as himself, A Song is Born (1948), Here Comes the Croom (1951), The Glenn Miller Story (1954) - as himself, High Society (1956) - as himself, The Five Pennies (1959) - as himself, Paris Blues (1961) - as Wild Man Moore, and Hello, Dolly! (1969).
