Description
[Astronauts/“New Nine”] Official NASA color photograph of “Astronaut Group 2,” also known as “The New Nine,” which was the second group of astronauts selected by NASA on September 17, 1962. This group augmented the “Original 7” Mercury astronauts for the upcoming Gemini and Apollo missions, to deliver on President John F. Kennedy’s pledge of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. Signatures in order of appearance from top left to top right: Neil Armstrong (1930-) flew on Gemini 8 in 1966 and the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, where he became the first person to step onto the moon. Edward H. White II, (1930-1967) flew on Gemini 4, was the first American to walk in space and died in the on-pad fire of Apollo 1 in 1967. Elliot See (1927-1966) was a test pilot astronaut who died in crash of his T-38 trainer into the McDonnell Aircraft plant. James Lovell (1928-) flew on Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 and was a member of first crew to rendezvous in space and the first to orbit the moon. James A. McDivitt (1929-) flew on Gemini 4 and Apollo 9. Charles Conrad, (1930-1999) flew on Gemini 5, Gemini 11, Apollo 12 and Skylab 2, was the third person on the moon and the only astronaut to fly Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab. Thomas P. Stafford (1930-) flew on Gemini 6, Gemini 9, Apollo 10, and was a member of the first crew to rendezvous in space. John Young (1930-) flew on Gemini 3, Gemini 10, Apollo 10, Apollo 16, STS-1 and STS-9 and is the only astronaut to fly Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle missions. Frank Borman (1928-) flew on Gemini 7, Apollo 8 and was the a member of the first crew to rendezvous in space and the first to orbit the moon. Mount: 20 x 15 3/4 in. Img: 14 x 11 in. Mount has a little foxing, photo beginning to fade, slightly lifting at edges. Very good. Provenance: Given to John Petersen, Chief Publicist for NASA manned space missions.
