(1796 - 1856) American politician and Taylor's Secretary of State who negotiated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty with Great Britain. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 6, 1849 to future president James Buchanan. In part: "...The college of St. Mary's at Wilmington, Delaware was incorporated two years ago and is in successful operation. Alfred Du Pont Esquire is President of the Institution. He has required me to apply... for any and all books to which the College may be entitled... by the Government at Washington...". Fine.
