SARA T. HUGHES (1896-1985) Federal district judge remembered for having administered the Presidential Oath to Lyndon B. Johnson aboard Air Force One in Dallas, immediately following the death of President John F. Kennedy. Typed D.S., 1p. 4to., Dallas, Nov. 22, 1963, the text of the Presidential Oath of Office which Hughes administered to Johnson on Nov. 22, 1963. The oath is taken from Section I, Clause 7 of Article II of the Constitution, and reads: "I do solemnly swear... that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States". Judge Hughes has added, in conclusion: "So help me God.", and signed her name. The document is succinct and unadorned, befitting Hughes' style and the occasion. Very minor toning, slightly rough left margin, else fine.
