GRANT JOHNSON
(1858-1929) One of the very few African-Americans to be commissioned as a deputy U.S. Marshal on the western frontier. D.S., 1p. 4to., July 12, 1895, an expense voucher signed by Johnson for costs incurred while serving a warrant on one Henry Howard for larceny. The document tabulates the cost of issuing the warrant, travelling 147 miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Eufala in the Indian Territories (now Oklahoma), the return journey, and the cost of feeding the prisoner, for a total of $48.77. Framed.
