(1746-1817) African-American teacher, American Revolutionary War veteran, assessor, auditor, selectman and Justice of the Peace in Newmarket, New Hampshire. Thought to be the first African American elected to public office in the United States. D.S., 1p. 8vo., Newmarket, Apr. 1, 1809, a subpoena, summoning Reuben Whicher, George and Thomas Geerish, and Samuel Emerson to appear before Judge Cheswill. In part: "...Hereof, fail not as you will answer your default under the pains and penalties of the Law..." Folds, ragged margins, else very good.
