Description
A rare J. Suzanne Talbot couture chinoiserie cocktail ensemble, circa 1927, large woven label '10 Rue Royale, Paris, 14 Rue Royale', the striped gold lamé sweater-like top edged in woven bands of gold thread, peach and black silk braid with tasselled tie to the front, the matching pleated coral pink satin skirt with gold band to hem; the braid belt with large lacquered buckle with painted prunus blossom, bust 86cm, 34in (3) Suzanne Talbot was famous for her millinery which was regularly featured in Vogue in the 1920s and 30s, but she did also make couture clothing. However, for her own wedding in 1922 she chose Madeleine Vionnet to make her trousseau.
Condition
Gold lame sweater top - approx 3 small dark spots on the front chest area - possibly taking dye from the tassel during storage? Not hugely noticeable. Gold threads are tarnished in places - particularly over the shoulders. A few small breaks in the striped gold gauze front and back but again nothing hugely noticeable. Coral silk lining has perspiration stains at underarms and soiling around neck edge. Skirt: Lower pleated section of skirt is good condition. The plain upper band of crepe de chine has tears below the waistband. Buckle - good condition, the black and coral braid is quite crudely stitched - so probably re-sewn for a waist adjustment.
