Hand pained wooden icon of Saint Alexi, gifted by Russian monarchs to Alexi, the son of Nicholas II. Features hand embroidered cloth as the garments of the saint. Embellished with beaded mother of pearl accents. Dated on the back \\\"30th July 1914\\\". History of the piece is plaqued and hallmarked \\\"AK 84\\\" on the red velvet back and front. Saint Alexei, Metropolitan of Moscow who was the name Saint to the Crown Prince or Tsarevich Alexei Nikoliavich Romanov (1904-1918). The engraved plaque on the verso of this icon is a very personal and sincere poetic prayer to the Tsarevich “May the angel of the Lord go everywhere on the way with him…may your youth blossom…etc.” and concludes with a heartfelt, prayerful offering from, The Loyal Nuns of the Kholmogorisk Dormition Convent of the Arkhangelsk Dioceses, from the head Abbes, Angelina and the other Sisters, 30th July 1914. The engraved presentation plaque which is found on the lower margin (front side) of the icon states “To his Imperial Highness the Crown Prince Tsarevich and Grand Duke Alexei Nikoliavich, The God-protected on his tenth birthday, 30th July 1914”. Both plaques are hallmarked St. Petersburg, circa 1908-1917 and both with the maker’s initials AK, probably for the minor St. Petersburg silversmith Alexander Karpov, who was active in St. Petersburg from 1908-1917, and of no significance. Incredible historical piece.
