Item Details
Description
20th century AD. A bronze sceptre modelled on the vajra with median bulb and lotus-flower sockets, cage to each end formed with serpent-heads, biconical finials. 685 grams, 25.5cm (10"). Private collection, West London, UK; acquired in the 1990s. The thunderbolt emblem first appeared in Indian Buddhism as a symbol of Vajrapani, the special protector of the Buddha, but it predates Buddhism and is found as the weapon of various Hindu deities such as Indra and Shiva. The Vajra symbolizes indestructibility and overwhelming power. In Tibetan the Vajra is called Dorje meaning diamond and represents the diamond-hard quality of the Buddha's mind. A Vajra with five points represents the five elements and the five sorts if wisdom.
