Description
DESCRIPTION: Fred Cleveland (Navajo, 20th Century). Oil on canvas in wooden frame. Signed in lower right corner. Depicts man in bear headdress with two feathers and turquoise elements and a shadowy form of a bear head in the background, possibly a skinwalker reference. Cleveland is a member of the Bitter Water and Kayonnie clans. He was born in a hogan on the Navajo Reservation near Ganado, Arizona where his family raised sheep. Cleveland went away to study for a year and a half at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. MEASUREMENTS: 29-1/2" x 23-1/4". Overall with frame 33-1/4" x 27". CONDITION: Two minor indentations in lower right corner. Few marks to canvas above head of man. Minimal roughness to back edges of frame.
