signed and dated on back. Unfolded 15 is both a painting and an object. Since his first use of an unfolded cardboard box in 1980, Arends has dealt with the physicality of the materials he uses to create his images. The artist's marks become the subject matter in these abstractions—often in the format of boxes. Arends’ acute understanding of formalism and the underlying issues delicately intertwine in his oeuvre. The artist once said, “I look on the paint I use like blood, the wax like flesh, the wood and steel like bone.”
