Description
A choice Near Eastern bronze dagger with original scabbard, c. 1200 - 1000 BC, the blade and handle cast as one piece, handle flanged for inlays and with a caged pommel. The blade is short and narrowed from repeated sharpening, the midrib accentuated by attractive incised vertical lines. The scabbard is formed from a single bronze sheet with folded collar around the opening and with rolled tip. On back, four holes for the mount and backing as well as a small rivet that perhaps repaired an ancient crack. Both pieces are well-preserved and very rarely offered together. Dagger length: 11 1/4 in (13.3 cm); Scabbard length: 9 in (22.8 cm). Ex Chicago private collection.
