Item Details
Description
Roman, ca. 100-300 CE. This delicate ancient blown glass flask has two applied handles. The neck has a beautiful iridescent patina; in other places, the vessel is so well-preserved that it can be seen through. The neck is long and thin and the body has some minor distortions showing the results of the glass blowing process. Glass blowing, invented sometime early in the first century CE in the Roman Middle East, revolutionized Roman household goods. Cheap, easy-to-manufacture glass products meant that glass quickly replaced pottery for everyday objects. A flask like this one would most likely have been used to hold perfume. Perfume was ubiquitous among free Roman citizens of all social classes. Size: 5-1/2" tall x 3-1/4" wide + custom stand.
