BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI AS RELIGIOUS LEADER
Item Details
Description
Partially fire-gilded bronze. Tibet, approx. 16th to 17th cent.
In this very high quality bronze sculpture, Buddha sits in monk´s robes in padmasana, one hand holding an alms bowl patra, the other showing symbolically die earth touching gesture bharoundisparsha, sign of his victory over Mara. Shakyamuni is here depicted as leader of the Buddhist Sangha (community). Full of character are the facial features, gaze lowered, brows nicely curved and urna over bridge of the nose. The head form broadens toward the top and is elongated, ushnisha are not integrated in the hair style, but rather as a dome with lotus bud above and gilded. This bronze is in three-pieces, the exceptionally designed lotus base is not gilded. Buddha and the aureoles are attached to the base. The last is powerfully crafted with flames, often pierced and offers a spirited contrast to Buddha´s meditative posture, at the same time a spiritual elevation which the work emanates.
