One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1817-1837, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a vertically-brushed tulip. Brushed cobalt highlights along the edges of the handles. Brushed cobalt daub under one handle. Desirable one-gallon size. An in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder on one side. Some wear to interior of rim. A tiny nick to one handle. A faint, approximately 2" vertical line at base, continuing approximately 1 1/2" onto underside. This line does not appear to continue through to the interior and possibly occurred in the firing. A tiny base nick.
