Item Details
Description
Exceedingly Rare Stoneware Fruit Jar, Impressed "APPLES", probably John Morgan, Rockbridge County, VA, circa 1835, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, tapered collar, and flared rim, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted fruit name, "APPLES". This jar shares similarity in form and overall style to the well-known fruit jars made by Clarkson Crolius, Sr. of Manhattan, New York. The distinctive darker, mottled clay and different font on the jar suggest it may have been made by New-York-trained potter, John Morgan, while active in Rockbridge County, Virginia. It is the first we have seen by any maker bearing this impressed inscription. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A restored 3" x 1 1/4" section to base. A minor rim chip. H 9".
