Item Details
Description
Rare Molded Blue Stoneware Pitcher with Figural Handle, attributed to D. & J. Henderson, Jersey City, NJ, circa 1829-1833, finely-molded pitcher with pedestal base, relief bearded satyr's head, acanthus leaf, and scrollwork motifs to body, and grape vine motif to spout. Handle in the form of a satyr clutching a reed pipe and staff. Includes applied pewter rim and lid. Underside incised with a small horizontal cross. This pitcher features a striking light-blue coloration, rarely found on early American molded wares. The color is closely-related to that found on a small number of iconic marine pitchers with molded sea life, made by E. & W. Bennett of Baltimore, MD. Provenance: Recently found in New Jersey. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 1/4".
