Description
Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ origin, second half 18th century, cylindrical jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and slightly-flared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with two cobalt watchspring motifs, including added curved lines connecting each spring. Desirable size and form. Cylindrical jars bearing the early American watchspring designs are significantly rarer than ovoid examples, and this jar is the first of its type we have ever offered. Two base chips, measuring 3/4" and 5/8", along with shallow chipping to underside at bottom edge of jar, and some tiny chips to base. H 9 7/8".
