Description
Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Pitcher with Impressed Floral Motif, Stamped "C. CROLIUS, / MANUFACTURER, / NEW-YORK.", Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1815, highly-void pitcher with short collar, decorated with swag-like brushwork flanking and surrounding the maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. Impressed flower blossom below maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Signed Crolius pitchers are considered rare. This example is the only Crolius piece we have seen impressed with this specific floral motif. Heavy iron deposits throughout suggest that this may have been an experimental piece. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Two rim chips and a spout chip. A crack across underside, extending 6 1/2" up side of pitcher. Heavily-blistered iron deposits throughout. H 12 1/4".
