Description
Portrait of Andrew Jackson, attributed to Charles Bird King, circa 1819, oil on board, 28 1/2 X 23 5/8 inches, frame size 36 7/8 X 32 inches. Provenance: This portrait was given to Percy Selden Straus in 1944 under the will of his father, Percy Straus Sr. (R. H. Macy and Co.). This painting had been incorrectly attributed to Frederick R. Spencer (1806-1875), who hadn't even begun painting at the time this portrait had been painted. However, this painting is most likely the "unlocated" portrait referenced in The Paintings of Charles Bird King (1785-1862) by Andrew J. Cosentino: 99. General Andrew Jackson 1818-1819; Unlocated. Exhibited at the PAFA in 1823. References: Oliver , J. Q. Adams, p. 92; mentions that Adams saw this portrait at CBK's on March 24, 1819. PAFA 1813, p. 13, #250; lists portrait as "painted for Delaplaine's Gallery." Splits to panel and mounted to board.
