Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. This large storage jar has beautiful geometric designs suggestive of eyes or waves around the body, the neck, and the rim; however, its most charming feature are the two small monkeys perched above the handles, their paws to their faces, as if they are stuffing food into their mouths or gasping with horror. The handles are small but functional. The Chancay replaced the Wari, but little is known about them from archaeology aside from the fact that they were contemporaries of the Inca and in their latter period came under Inca influence. Their goods were traded throughout the Andean region. A jar such as this may have been used for storing water or chicha, the fermented beer drink. Size: 24" H x 16" diameter.
