Description
Style of J. & J. W. Meeks (American (New York), 1797-1869), circa 1850-60. A monumental rosewood and mahogany etagere in the Rococo Revival style comprising a trapezoidal mirrored backboard with tiered shelves over a marble top console table, The backboard surmounted by a crest with heavily carved cabbage roses within an urn flanked by pierced and carved foliate scrolls, surmounting five tiered shelves with scalloped front edges, allover flanked by pierced openwork forming foliate scrolls and angels, the scrolling front stiles comprising foliate scrolls resting on supports in the forms of gryphons with elongated wings and tongues, each with three tiers of carved candlestands, the table comprising of a central marble top with scalloped front edge flanked by two secret storage compartments with wooden lids, table edge decorated with relief gadrooning over the conforming apron with high relief carved floral garland, all raised on four cabriole legs, the front two headed by high relief carved flowers, the back two headed by foliate carvings, the backboard continuing to the base of the piece forming a pier mirror, the legs joined by pierced and carved curved stretchers with large highly carved central urn and flanked by two side shelves with pierced galleries. Approximate height 93.25", width 57", depth 27". Provenance: From the Estate of Mary L. Haugk, Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Condition
Etagere is in very good condition and structurally sound with all carved elements intact. Pierced side elements at back with a few scattered splits from expansion, not particularly noticeable. Marble top exhibits some abrasions, a moisture ring, and scattered gilt marks as well as light brownish discoloration at right side beneath wooden gryphon support.
