Item Details
Description
Masterful Rendition of a work by Rembrandt Harmeszoon Van Rijn (Dutch, 1609-1669) - "Girl at a Window" (1645). Colors, light and composition, true to the manner of the Dutch Great. Signed REMBRANDT F.. This is the last type of signature he used, believed to be from the period 1633-1669, differentiated by the fact that his full name is written out, along with the "f.", for fecit, and with the "b" inscribed in a Gothic manner with a closed upper loop. The original work, titled "Girl Leaning on a Stone Window Sill" or "Girl At a Window" has several versions, with different colors and slightly varying compositions, the most well known one being dated 1645 and currently housed in the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. A very old paper attachment on the back, handwritten with quill ink, which confirms this: "The girl at the window. Rembrandt painted several pictures of this girl, slightly varying in colour and composition. [Hard to read, but likely Several] are gone rather dark with age. As .... ..... [Hard to read]". Signed by a Dr. Browne, who's first name is also hard to make out, but possibly Latham. Dr. Browne was most likely a Museum Curator or Arts history expert from Britain, judging from the writing style. Also a red wax seal on the back, unfortunately the tag has been torn and the writing faded with age. An early Homage to a Rembrandt masterpiece, dates back to the 18th century at the very least, although it could very well be closer to Rembrandt's life time frame. Under Black Light, the signature is proven to be contemporary to the painting, definitely not a latter addition. It can possibly even be an original work from Rembrandt, probably an esquisse - a quickly done early prototype, painted before the final work, similar to a rough draft, approximately four times smaller than the original in London. Painted on wooden board. In a new, antiquated wooden frame. Measurements: 10.75" x 9.75" framed, the board is approx. 9" x 8" (22.8 cm x 20.3 cm)
