Item Details
Description
An inked 7pg. Ms letter on two lined and folded letter sheets with blind-stamped stationary seal in upper left corners written by Adolphus Fletcher (1796-1866) the former editor/owner of The Chautauqua Co. Democrat, a newspaper published from 1853-1891. The letter is written to his 47 year old son John Warren, a farmer living in Clermont Co., Ohio with his wife and two children. This letter tells his son that he has sold the newspaper to a Hanson Waite due to ill health and now intends to take it easy and lists his new profession as ‘loitering about the streets’. Talks of the war being very good for Jamestown and the surrounding area with land prices in the $50 an acre range and how ‘Chautauqua County has done her share manfully in the war…’ The 112th N.Y. Regiment was made up of men from Chautauqua Co. and was listed by Col. Fox as one of the 300 fighting regiments. He writes of Hanson Waite ‘had not $5 in the world, and wife & 3 children. But he had troops of rich cousins & warm friends.’ He sold his half of the newspaper to Waite for $2000. Asks his son if: ‘I would like to know whether you have heard any thing about your Uncle Ebenezer since the war. Who last he knew was postmaster in Harrisonburg, La. In the summer of 1861.’ John Warren later moved to Sugar Grove, Pa. 10 miles south of Jamestown and owned and edited several newspapers in the area. An interesting letter that lists many of the more prominent citizens of Chautauqua Co., N.Y.
