Description
North America, United States, World War I era, ca. 1918. A brass US artillery shell casing embossed with an elaborate scene depicting a female sitting at a table, with a sad, forlorn countenance, gazing across the table at a glass presumably poured for her missing suitor/soldier, all against a stippled ground. The scene takes place in a lush wooded setting with trees, a buck and a lamb. The rim curves to created a lovely wavy pattern. Above are the initials "D. X". An aesthetically fabulous and sweetly sentimental work of trench art. Size: 10-1/2" x 3-1/4" in diameter.
