Description
Europe, France, ca. 1914 to 1917 CE. A World War I era brass artillery shell case that is exceedingly rare for its embossed Saint George Slaying the Dragon theme and its Greek inscription that reads "Saint George." The Greeks fought a mainly defensive war with the Americans, all the while protecting their own border from attack. During WWI the French forces sent a large artillery unit to assist the Greeks in making an unusual attack across the border. This is most likely how the shell case landed in Greece and has Greek inscriptions. A wonderful and rare example, rich for its iconography and history! Size: 13-5/8" x 3-1/8" in diameter.
