Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A large, plump terracotta dog with perky ears, snout, and upturned tail. Nice facial detailing including coffee-bean eyes and a few wrinkles. The artisans of this culture rarely depicted animals; this was more typically interesting to the Colima sculptors. Most Nayarit figures that have survived the tests of time are rather humanoid by comparison. Nice manganese particularly to underside and lovely burnishing marks revealing the hand of the artisan. Size: 12"L x 8"H x 6-3/4"W.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930's, Bel Air, CA.
