Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit and Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 700 to 900 CE; Mayan Territories, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An adorable group of four terracotta canine figures from various Pre-Columbian cultures. First is a Nayarit double-headed quadruped vessel with an olla-shaped body and red, white, and orange stripes. Second is a Colima redware puppy in a curled, recumbent position with a large hole in its head. Third is a Veracruz standing dog with four legs, a rotund body, and a toothy, aggressive expression. Last is a Mayan seated puppy with disc-shaped ears, a twisted cord necklace with a large circular pendant, prominent genitalia, and a tail that doubles as a whistle. A wonderful ensemble for any dog-loving collector! Size of largest (Veracruz): 4.5" H (11.4 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Arkansas, USA, 1950s to 1960s. Collection #WC107; ES.90.3; M382. Exhibited at the Marjorie Barrick Museum, UNLV, 1990s.

Condition
All items have age-commensurate surface wear, minor chips, pitting, and mineral deposits. Nayarit vessel has chip to one ear and scratches to pigment; has "WC107" written on underside in black. Colima dog has highpoint wear and some glaze loss; has "CBEW" written on underside in black. Veracruz dog has some white surface pigment and surface roughness. Mayan dog has restoration to left ear and a stable hairline crack on backside; also has "ES.90.3" written in black paint on underside.
