A Chinese Four Panel Screen with Eight Porcelain Plaque Inserts Painted by Duan Zian, Early 20th Century
This screen consists of four panels. Each panel has two porcelain plaque inserts. The upper porcelain plaque on each panel is painted with a birthday celebration scene, for Wong Mu. There are four characters on each of these upper plaques: Fu, Lu, Shou, and Xi meaning good fortune, success, longevity, and happiness. Each of the lower porcelain plaque inserts is painted depicting alternately a landscape scene or village scene. Each lower plaque is also inscribed with a poem describing the scene. The plaques are painted by artist Duan Zian. In the wood above the plaques and below the plaques on each panel are carved dragons. The panels are approximately 60 5/8 inches high X 21 1/4 inches wide, each. The upper plaques are approximately 10 1/2 inches high X 12 5/8 inches wide, each, and the bottom plaques are approximately 20 inches high X 12 5/8 inches wide, each.
