Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid 20th century CE. An intriguing oil on metal ex voto depicting a tragic train derailment set in the countryside, with a decoupaged color print of the Nuestra Senora de San Juan de los Lagos (Our Lady of San Juan of the Lakes) in the upper left corner. he translation is as follows: "I give thanks to the Holy Mother for saving us from death in the derailment of a train. Thirty passengers were seriously injured. I had a minor injury; I hit my forehead. My children Carmen, Estevan and Manuel were uninjured for which I give this retablo of thanks. Guadalupe Rangel." Signed J Y YmicJT (?) at upper right.Size: 11-1/4" x 11-1/2".
This particular example was featured in the exhibition entitled "Saints and Sinners Mexican Devotional Art" at the California Heritage Museum in 2005 and published in the exhibition catalogue of the same title, edited by the late James Caswell (historian, collector, and owner of Historia Antiques) and Jenise Amanda Ramos (The California Heritage Museum and Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 2006, p. 153).
