Another true special stamp is the the often misunderstood but legitimate Wheelock overprint Prussia mark, with the logo registered in the U.S. on June 12, 1914, but apparently first used (according to R.H. Capers), on august 1, 1898! Although many experts believe the mark below the Wheelock sticker will be the classic Wreath & Star from the Suhl factory until ca. 1914. it has been said that, NO COLLECTOR HAS YET MADE HIS FINDINGS KNOWN BY SCRAPING OFF THE WHEELOCK STAMP! WELL, AS OURS IS A MATCHED SET, AND THE MASTER BOWL CARRIES THE PROPER WREATH & STAR - PROBLEM SOLVED!! Our mark is Capers designation RS3.4G 1, found on page #59 of Capers Notes on the Marks of Prussia. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The Wheelock family began selling china in Wisconsin well before the Civil War. In the early 1890s one of the many Wheelock children, Mr. Charles Wheelock, had the vision to expand their business into the latest craze, souvenir china. The business grew quickly and soon they employed over thirty salesmen selling souvenir china in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Wheelock never manufactured any china, souvenir or tableware as some believe, but was strictly an importer. Because Germany and Austria had the raw material to produce high quality hard paste porcelain, those two countries were the major source of decorative & souvenir china. Sales of souvenirs was site specific, so scenes or pictures were selected in the area where they were to be sold, usually from postcards, and were then sent to Europe for processing. The next step was to make a transfer print of the picture which was then applied to the china. Initially the pictures were black and white but later many were hand colored at factories. Eventually transfer prints were done in color eliminating the step of coloring by hand. All pieces were fully fired prior to exportation. The secret of the Wheelock success was based in planning, as Charles Wheelock and his right hand man John Roth were astute business men and quickly developed a turnaround time with foreign manufactures, which other importers were unable to duplicate. The result was Wheelock was able to fill orders faster than their competitors. In 1884 John H Roth had entered the ceramic trade as a clerk for the C. E. Wheelock Pottery Company in South Bend, and over time, became a major force in the company. World War I led to the decline of souvenir china popularity and availability, but the sale of Wheelock souvenir china continued to maintain a certain level until 1922, but the glory days were long gone. Wheelock appears to have been active in German porcelain importation until the early 1930s.
