The RS Prussia Wreath & Star mark is derived from its founder, Reinhold Schlegelmilch, and was later used by his sons Erhard and Arnold, after his passing. The history of RS Prussia Porcelain dates back to 1869, with the opening of the Reinhold Schlegelmilch Porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Silesia, Germany, as well as a smaller facility & decorating studio in Suhl, Thuringia, Germany. These two Reinhold facilities produced the finest and most innovative hard paste Art Nouveau porcelain in the world from the end of the Victorian era ca. 1892 up until the beginning of World War I. During the early part of this period, most of the pieces exported to the United States sported the ca. 1895 RS Steeple marks that were augmented in 1903 / 1904 by the red and green aforementioned Wreath & Star signature. However, history records that this mark only proliferated from the early 1900s to 1914. In 1910, Reinhold’s Tillowitz factory reputedly changed exclusively to the Green RS Germany Wreath & Star (and after 1918, added other colors as well). WHILE TILLOWITZ CHANGED FROM THE TRADITIONAL REINHOLD SCHLEGELMILCH WREATH & STAR TO THE GREEN RS GERMANY STAMP, THE SUHL FACILITY MAINTAINED USE OF THE RED & GREEN, WREATH & STAR UNTIL 1914 SHORTLY BEFORE ITS CLOSING. Tillowitz survived beyond 1915, the point at which the Suhl factory was forced to close forever, a causality of WW I. Both RS Steeple & RS Prussia marks paralleled the RS Germany Wreath & Star, and are recorded until 1914 / 1915. The RS Germany mark from the Tillowitz factory was seen until its last documented use in 1938. RS Prussia porcelain is known both for the complexity of its molds and for the beauty of the patterns, most of which were applied using portrait & floral transfers, as well as adding varying degrees of hand decoration, including gilding or heavy enamel to augment and complement the main thematic content. This fine heirloom is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford, respected, longtime dealers of valuable antiques.
