RARE 1882 SMITH MT WASINGTON / PAIRPOINT BISCUIT BARREL
Item Details
Description
The following treasure is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. The AEAA is exceptionally pleased to present the next of a mammoth group of approximately (120) Rare & beautiful Mt. Washington + Rodefer Glass / hand finished C.F. Monroe, Wave Crest & Smith Brothers pieces, to be sold over several auctions. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx This lot represents a Rare & gorgeous Georgian style, golden satin, collar base, lobed medallion Mt. Washington Opal glass blank, finished in a spectacular enhanced poppies theme, with classical pink dapery relief medallion borders + heavy enamel floral accents with ruby cabachons. This stunning biscuit barell carries a proper two line Mt. Washington style & batch designation, and features the defining joiner-work early underlined P in Diamond mark, denoting the brother company, Pairpoint Manufacturing. The artistry is almost assuredly by the Smith Bros. with the style of pansies, and the addition of the ivory flowers & cabachons. Plus, the multi faceted lid is finished in a rare gold dipped finish, with a true crown finial. Our Mt. Washington / Pairpoint treasure is in excellent condition with some minor tarnish, and dates between ca. 1882 & 1885, while standing a prominent 6.5 x 6.5 x 8.5 inches tall (handle up) and weighing 2# 4 oz. ***** RARITY NOTE: The short Smith Bros history below, speaks of other silver plate suppliers, rather than Pairpoint. This was so, but not until the latter 1880s-1894 (the Pairpoint / Mt. Washington merger). The actual joining of the two giants had a long courtship from ca. 1870 until 1894, and many Smith Brothers items were adorned with Pairpoint joiner-work from their founding in 1878 until the mid 1880s. This classic Mt. Washington / Pairpoint / Smith heirloom will be a centerpiece in any collection. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The Smith brothers decorating studio was the early epitome of fabulous high quality hand painted glass articles bearing the Mt. Washington pedigree, from the late 19th century! This biscuit barrel or jar is a hand painted white opal glass with a low luster finish with beautiful details. Smith Brothers was originally part of the Mt Washington Glass Works in New Bedford, Massachusetts during the early 1870’s, as a decorating department, gaining a worldwide reputation for producing the finest and most artistically accomplished hand painting on glass. Even after they left the firm to open their own shop in 1878, Alfred & Harry Smith still acquired most of their opal glass blanks from Mt Washington. Though the rim and lid to the jar are unmarked, history records that the Smith Bros. most often relied on the joiner work of either Meriden Britannia Co. or Reed & Barton.
