Item Details
Description
The following treasure is from the living estate of Ailene & Buddy Ford; noted dealers and lifelong collectors of exceptional antique & vintage heirlooms. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. The AEAA proudly presents this wonderful Rare antique brides bowl paring, with an elevated, properly marked Rogers Smith & Co. custom floral, tri stanchion Quadruple plate frame, with a broad open blossom top ca. 1910. The bowl is a magnificent English hand blown paneled example in fine Rosaline glass. Initially thought to be Steuben, the tapered round applied foot is classic Edwardian English design. The base ground leads us to believe that our fantastic bowl is by Stevens & Williams also ca. 1910. This brilliant combination measures 10.375 x 3 inches deep, with the stand 7 x 7.5 inches tall, both weighing 2# 8 oz., and the bowl is excellent, while the stand is VG with minor tarnish. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. ROGERS, SMITH & CO. was organized in 1857 by William Rogers Sr. and George W. Smith at Meriden, Ct. The firm was merged in 1861 with Rogers Brothers Mfg. Co. under the guidance of William Rogers. The tools and the dies were bought in 1862 by Meriden Britannia Co transferring to Meriden the production of the 1847 Rogers Bros line also under the direction of William Rogers. In 1863 Meriden Britannia Co bought the hollow-ware division, and in 1865, the plating shop was transferred from New Haven to Meriden and merged with Meriden Britannia Co in 1866. At that juncture, Rogers, Smith & Co ceased to exist as a separate firm, BUT, was still used as a trademark of Meriden Britannia Co when the International Silver Co was formed in 1898. The Rogers Smith stamps may have been used until ca. 1915.
