Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Michoacan, Tarascan, ca. early 14th century to mid-16th century CE. An elaborately decorated stucco pedestal bowl of the post-classical Tarascan culture. Size: 5-3/4" in diameter x 3-1/8"H.

The painstaking technique to create this exceptional example of pseudo-cloisonné (stucco) pottery is impressive. Decorated in cream and smokey blue/grey against a red background, the iconographic program on the outer walls is comprised of a series of stylized bird heads; the pedestal is adorned with a band of abstract geometrics, and the interior of the bowl shows a large spiral motif. This type of pottery shows strong Teotihuacan influence and is often misidentified as being from the Valley of Mexico. A beautiful example of Tarascan artistry!

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.
