Description
14. Boxwood Folk Art Cane-Ca. 1700-Substantial single piece boxwood cane carved with what seems to be the life evolution of a monk. The cane is topped by the bearded monk wearing a long cassock with the fringed cascia belt on one side and long rosary on the other above a panel with various tools used for the crucifixion of Jesus besides the legendary lance topped by a vinegar sponge and the pair of dices used by the Roman soldiers to draw his tunic. Further down, one can see the monk at five different stages of his life, two of them with other religious figures. The few of the clear graffiti’s let us safely assume that “Gallino” must be the name of the monk and that he climbed high the church hierarchy during his life. In any case, the cane aged well with a gloriously rich and glazed patina and surely deserves further academic research. Most likely Italian.-Cane Diameter 1 ½”, OL. 39”-$2,000-$3,000
