13th-15th century AD. A massive limestone corbel in the form of a gargoyle head with curly hair, bulging eyes and wide, open mouth into which the fingers are inserted. 100+ kg, 51 x 69cm (20 x 27"). Property of a North East Essex collector; acquired in the 1980s. Also known as a mouth puller, this type of gargoyle is thought to represent the sin of gluttony.
