Before August 1684 AD. A gold touchpiece of King Charles II, dies by John Roettier, first issue (struck before August 1684). Obv: warship Royal Sovereign sailing left with CAR.II.D.G.M.B.FR.(piercing)ET.HI.REX legend. Rev: St Michael slaying wyvern with SOLI.DEO.(piercing)GLORIA. legend. 3.36 grams, 23mm (1"). Property of a Surrey, UK collector. Charles II held his first Touching in the Banqueting House, London in June 1660 with over 600 scrofula sufferers attending; from July 1660, Touchings were held each Friday in London between 1 November and 18 December, during the months of January and February and for a month at Easter, with a maximum of 200 being allowed to attend for each day; the weight of the gold touchpieces was reduced to 30 grains from August 1684 and this example is of the earlier type, struck at 54.3 grains; touchpieces are always pierced.
