Description
African Songye or Songe (Zaire) hand carved and polychrome kifwebe tribal mask of figural anthropomorphic form with repeating ridges throughout in black, red and white. Mask with pierced eyes, protruding mouth with X incised motif and small round holes on edges where grass or hair may have originally been strung. Unmarked. Overall approximately 21.75" x 10.5". Exhibition History: Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, Florida, "Collector's Annual 1989: African Art", February 17-March 19, 1989 as #107 in catalogue.
Condition
Wear to polychromed elements throughout. Wood split running at bottom (see images). Scattered wood losses and wear commensurate with age. Mask structurally stable. Some scattered dirt and grime visible--would likely benefit from professional cleaning. Scattered surface scratches throughout. Scattered small holes that appear to be from worming. No signs of further damage, loss or restoration.
