Description
A Middle Kingdom wood model of two men making bread, Middle Kingdom, c. 1985 - 1773 BC, the two figures kneel on a large rectangular base, one kneading a large mass of dough in a large oval-shaped basin and the other holds forth a loaf of bread, with cruciform stamp on top. Each figure wears a kilt, a short wig and a broad collar, their features nicely painted in reddish tones with black cosmetic details, the broad collars with alternating black and white bands with yellow spots. The kilts are in a tan color with black cord ties around their wastes, decorated with yellow spots. The rectangular base is painted to resemble a woven reed matte, the braided fibers clearly visible, the side in a reddish pigment. Very well preserved and without repair of restoration, the pigment with light deposits throughout. The base measures 13 ¾ in x 7 5/8 in x 1 ¼ in (34.2 x 19.4 x 3.2 cm), the figures are 9 ¾ in (24.8 cm) and 10 in (25.5 cm) high (not including the width of the base). Ex Drexel Hill, PA estate.
