Description
A large Canosan Greek volute krater, Magnia Graecia, c. 3rd Century BC, with rooster in relief on the neck, the body decorated with vertical ribbing and the volutes molded with mascaroons on both sides. The pedestal foot which did not survive has been replaced, (probably during the late 19th century), by a marble pedestal with central stone drum. H: 26 in (65.8 cm), W: 13 3/8 in (18.7 cm). Some repair to each handle and the neck, few small sherds missing on the rim. A large and impressive piece! Ex Private English Victorian collection.
