Canosan, ca. 700 B.C.
Featuring a massive Canosan volute krater, the handle terminals in the form of molded Medussa masks on both sides. Decorated with a standing Murmillo gladiator, within two columns and an arch, he is facing left and holding a shield in his left hand, and a dagger in his right hand. Other white paint decorations around the neck, rim, and body of this krater. Gladiators were the main events of spectacular shows throughout ancient Roman arenas. They have been portrayed on oil lamps, stone reliefs, pottery ware, and mosaic panels. A very rare Canosan krater. Dimensions: 24 3/4 inches H. (62.9 cm.)
Provenance: Ex- European art market; Ex: Important Italian private collection of Dauni ceramic; Ex: New Jersey private collection.
