NELLIE FONTAINE BINCKLEY (WASHINGTON, DC, 19TH CENTURY) PAIR OF AUGUSTA CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PORTRAITS, oil on canvas, depicting Theodore F. Shuey (1845-1933) in his military uniform, and his second wife Willie Mayes Shuey (1868-1964). Signed "NF Binckley / '88" lower left corners. Original matching gilt and gesso frames. Circa 1888. 33" x 27 1/2" OA.
Provenance: Property of a Shuey family descendent.
Catalogue Note: Theodore Shuey was born in Augusta Co., VA between Churchville and Buffalo Gap. He saw service during the Civil War. After the war and upon graduation from Otterbein College he moved to Washington, DC. There he began working as a reporter of the United States Senate and in 1896 was voted as Chief Reporter. Willie Mayes Shuey was his second wife. They were married in Hunstville, AL in 1887. This pair of portraits was undoubtedly painted to celebrate their wedding.
Nellie Binckley was a painter and illustrator working in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA. She studied under William M. Chase and her work has been included in several exhibitions.

Condition
Lady in excellent condition, man with some flaking paint to lower edge, one small light puncture, and some light blistering. Frames are excellent.
