AMERICAN, POSSIBLY VIRGINIA, SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) CANINE SPORTING PAINTING, oil on canvas, depicting a setter on point, signed indistinctly lower left. Information provided with the painting reads "[w]ritten in old script on stretcher, revealed when conservation was being done: 'Portrait of Jupiter, the property of John Borland, M. D. / Painted by Robinson. A good whiskey. A perfect dog.' Purchased from an estate in Winchester, Virginia, 1997. / Painted in 1863". Additional hand-written note included with painting reads "John Borland's (grand?) daughter Elsie lived to be 100 years old. Her daughter married Orme Wilson. Elsie lived at a famous house near Winchester, Virginia called "The Tulleries". Purchased in Nov. 1997 at Headley's Auction of the contents of the Tulleries by RGS". Housed in period, possibly original, frame. Mid 19th century. 11 3/8" x 15 3/8" sight, 19 3/4" x 23 1/2" OA.
