SARAH LOVEL (AMERICAN) NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, eight rows of letters and numbers above two flower baskets and "Sarah Lovel, / aged 11 years / 1831" flanked by floral sprigs and dogs, all within a simple line border. Later frame. Note on verso traces the descent of this sampler from Sarah Lovel Enos to Lyla Erb Shrager. Probably Pennsylvania or Delaware. 1831. 17" x 8" sight.
Provenance: Property of a Virginia private collector.
Catalogue Note: The 1850 Federal Census records Robert E. Enos (b.c. 1814) and his wife Sarah Lovel Enos (b.c. 1820) residing in New Castle, DE. The census records Sarah's birthplace as Pennsylvania, although her younger sister's birthplace is listed as Delaware.
