Item Details

Description

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. Two rectangular painted cloth panels from the same textile in hues of brown, tan and cream. Each features a warrior/deity/ruler head donning a grand crescent-shaped headdress and dramatic, stylized puma profile ear ornaments attached to a serpentine body that spirals around the head and resolves in another visage at the tail end. The body is bordered with a diamond pattern and further adorned with repeated representations of Andean crosses. This rich iconography suggests that we are witnessing a regal body in a transformative state. One of the panels also includes a lizard-like creature in the composition. Bordering the central figures is an interlocking temple stair/step motif. Both panels are framed with a custom, museum-quality frame with diamond motif that complements the central curling, feathered serpent body’s diamond pattern. Size: textiles alone measure 17” x 21” and 19” x 24”, 23” x 27” and 25” x 30” with frame.

Professionally stretched, mounted, conserved and framed. Both examples show some fabric loss due to corrosion of dye material on cotton, now stable.
