Description
China, around 1900
Depicted are two figures with a friendly expression
Standing on a pumpkin or an eggplant
Underneath with later inscription
One figure is shown while playing the flute, the other figure can be seen in a slightly inclined position
Each head is covered with a fine headdress
Dressed in long, richly pleated robes, decorated with flower tendrils, bats and clouds ornaments
Decorative and detailed carving
Height, each: 25 cm

Condition:
The wooden figures show partly clearer signs of age and wear. The hands of one figure are missing. The other figure shows restorations and traces of glue. Some losses of material here and there as well as drying cracks are visible. Each height measures 25 cm.
Eight Immortals (Ba Xian)
The Eight Immortals are saints of the Taoism and the Chinese mythology. They often appear in a presentation on a boat, crossing the sea, with the help of their different abilities. According to the legend, each immortal comes with a special attribute; the eight treasures. The Eight Immortals are especially so popular because in believe of the people they assist in need and fight against injustice as well as against oppression. At the same time they are symbols of the eight circumstances: youth, age, poverty, wealth, nobility, nation, femininity and masculinity.
