Description
A Buddhist Tibetan goat skull & horn kapala, mid-20th Century, beautifully hand decorated with nickel and brass ornamentation formed by repousse, with sheet copper over the nose and brilliant red glass cabochons set atop the head and on each horns, the eyes in green glass. 15 1/2 in x 10 in x 8 in (39.2 x 25.4 x 20.3 cm). Well-preserved and quite impressive! Ex Pennsylvania private collection. These hand decorated kapalas, which are usually made from human skulls but come in many forms, are often found in the Buddhist homes and shrines. They are mainly used in rituals of tantric meditation, rituals to gods and deities to obtain their favor and also by Tibetan Lamas as an offering bowl or spiritual gift to deities.
