Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A grand and impressive anthropomorphic sculpture representing a seated shaman, with open and gently bent legs outstretched in front of him, elongated arms falling beside his bust, hands placed upon knees, his massive rectangular trunk incised with geometric designs, his neck girded by a scalloped and splayed collar. Adorning the figure's head and symbolizing his shaman status is a horned headdress that is further decorated with incised linear motifs. The figure's visage is quite serene, perhaps indicative of a prayerful or trance-like state. A magnificent example of Colima redware! Size: 15-1/2" (39.37 cm) x 10-3/4" (27.31 cm).
